
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College women's tennis team improved to 16-2 on the year with three matches over spring break. Coe went 2-1 in the matches, beating Berry 8-1 and Meredith 8-1, while dropping a 5-4 decision to Methodist.
The Kohawks opened the week with an 8-1 win over Berry. At number one doubles, junior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Waterloo) and sophomore Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) beat Alex Sanguilly and Maggie McDonald 8-2. At number two doubles, junior Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) and freshman Jackie Pedersen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) beat Caitlin Smith and Keri McGinnis 8-2. Coe took a 3-0 lead into singles, as sophomore Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) downed Rachel Sandoval and Ali Jackson 8-1.
At number one singles, Schupbach beat Sanguilly 6-3, 6-0, while Lucero was a 6-0, 6-0 victor over Smith. Pedersen defeated McDonald 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles, while Ohlman beat Sandoval 6-4, 6-2 at number four. Coe's final win over Berry came at number six, as Hoffmann beat Jackson 6-1, 6-1.
In Coe's loss to Methodist, the Kohawks trailed 2-1 after doubles play, with Schupbach and Lucero getting the only win at number one. They defeated Katherine Meindl and Laura Baker 8-2. At number one singles, Schupbach beat Meindl 5-7, 6-1, 10-5, while Lucero beat Rachel Purser 6-3, 6-0 at number two. Coe's other victory came at number six, as Hoffmann beat Emily Talley 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Kohawks bounced back to close the trip Wednesday with an 8-1 win over Meredith. Coe held a 3-0 lead after doubles play. At number one, Schupbach and Lucero beat Puja Patel and Caroline Hunter 8-4, while Ohlman and Pedersen beat Mollie Musgrave and Mary Lawrence Newton 8-0 at number two. Coe's final doubles win came at number three, as Hoffmann and Ferree beat Betty Edwards and Meg Crumpton 9-7.
Schupbach was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Patel at number one singles, as Lucero beat Hunt 6-0, 6-2 at number two. Pedersen downed Newton 6-2, 6-0 at number three, while Ohlman beat Edwards 6-4, 6-0 at number four. Coe's final win of the week came at number six, as Hoffmann beat Parker 6-0, 6-1.
Coe will return to action on March 17, as they host Augustana. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
