CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team earned a pair of Iowa Conference wins on Saturday, as they locked up the first spot in the Iowa Conference Tournament May 4-5. Coe improved to 16-3 overall and 5-0 in league play.
The Kohawks opened the day with a 9-0 win over the University of Dubuque. At number one doubles, freshman Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and junior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Paul Roberts and Andrew Sheedy 8-5. Sprinkel was then a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Roberts at number one singles, while Newman beat Nikolay Gospodinov 6-0, 6-0 at number four singles.
At number two doubles, sophomore Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and sophomore Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) beat Demetrius Johnson and Shawn Iben 8-2. Damisch was also a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Sheedy at number three singles.
Coe jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles as sophomore Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) and senior Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) beat Gospodinov and Michael Braden 8-2 at number three. Roger then beat Braden 6-0, 6-1 at number five singes, while Janssen was a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Dishon Deering at number six singles. Coe's final victory of the match came at number two singles, as sophomore Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) beat Johnson 6-2, 6-1.
The Kohawks second win of the day came over Simpson, as they beat the Storm 8-1. Coe opened with an 8-2 win at number one doubles, as Damisch and Woolf beat Adam Summitt and Alex Hook 8-2. At number two doubles, Stokstad and sophomore Daken Starkenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Jeff Armstrong and Daniel Schneider 8-0. Senior Doug Land (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and sophomore Alex Leovic (Littleton, Colo./Littleton) won by default at number three doubles.
Janssen was a 6-3, 6-3 victor over Hook at number two singles, while Starkenburg beat Armstrong 6-0, 6-1 at number three. At number four singles, sophomore Alex Klaas (Douman, Wis./Catholic Memorial) beat Schneider 6-0, 6-0. Land beat Blake Billings 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles while Leovic won by default at number six singles.
The Kohawks will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, as they travel to Crawfordsville, Ind. for the Kerry Seward Invitational.
