
GRINNELL, Iowa - After taking a 2-1 lead into singles, the Coe College women's tennis team held on for a 5-4 win over Grinnell College. The Kohawks entered the match ranked ninth in the central region, while the Pioneers were 13th.
At number one doubles, sophomore Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and junior Michelle Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) downed Sadhana Athreya and Laura Krull 8-1. Schupbach was then a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Athreya at number one singles, while Lucero beat Shirlene Luk 6-1, 6-1 at number two singles.
Coe took a 2-0 lead in doubles as freshman Jackie Pedersen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and junior Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) beat Toby Cain and Emma Macdonald 8-3. Ohlman also earned a 6-4, 7-6 win over Cain at number four singles for the Kohawks final win on the day.
The Kohawks (18-2 overall) will return to action April 20 when they travel to Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich. Coe will also face Hope the next day in Holland, Mich.
