CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team scattered 13 hits against Mount Mercy Tuesday night, as the Kohawks beat the Mustangs 7-2 in the crosstown rivalry. The Kohawks improved to 18-11 with the win.
Coe scored early in the game, as senior Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) singled to start the game. A double to left center by senior Tyler Leadley (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) drove in DeAngelis for the first run. Mount Mercy answered in the bottom of the first inning on a lead-off home run down the right field line by Dorman.
The Kohawks took the lead for good in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Freshman Jory Heckenberg (Stockport, Iowa/Van Buren) doubled to right center to start the inning. A bunt single by DeAngelis moved Heckenberg to third. Leadley grounded out to second base, as Heckenberg scored from third. A walk by junior Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and a bunt single by senior Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by senior Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) brought in DeAngelis for the second run of the inning. Mount Mercy's only other run came in the bottom of the sixth, as Thompson led off with a home run to left field.
Senior Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) singled down the left field line to start the sixth inning. An infield single by senior Brennan Melloy (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade) moved Sobba to second. A single to center field by freshman AJ Reuter (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) loaded the bases. Following a pitching change, Heckenberg hit into a double play with Sobba scoring.
With one out in the eighth, Sobba singled to left center. Following a walk from Melloy, Reuter hit his first career home run to left center, giving the Kohawks the 7-2 lead.
Leadley led the Kohawks with three hits, while DeAngelis, Sobba and Reuter had two apiece. Reuter drove in three runs, while Leadley brought in two. DeAngelis and Sobba each scored twice. Junior Ben Strellner (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) improved to 4-1 on the year with the win. He tossed six innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits. Junior Phil Richmond (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and freshman Aaron Collins (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) combined for the final three innings of hitless baseball.
The Kohawks return to Iowa Conference play this weekend with a key series. Coe, sitting in second place in the league standings, travels to league-leading Central on Friday and Saturday. First pitch in Pella is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.
