PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team opened Saturday's doubleheader at league-leading Central with a 7-2 victory before falling in the nightcap in extra innings.  Central scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the 2-1 victory.

The Kohawks scored early in the opener, but broke a late 2-2 tie for five unanswered runs.  Junior Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) reached on a fielders choice in the top of the first inning.  After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Stein scored on a single up the middle by senior Adam Nisenson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central).

With one out in the third inning, senior Scott DeAngelis (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) singled to right field.  With two outs, DeAngelis stole second.  Stein then singled to left field, driving in DeAngelis for the 2-0 lead.  Central scored its first run in the fourth inning.  Stetzel opened the inning with a double down the left field line.  With two outs, Carson singled up the middle, driving in Stetzel.

After the Kohawks left two runners on in the fifth, Central tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.  Judkins singled through the left side to open the inning before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mann and moved to third on a passed ball.  With two outs, Furlong reached on an error, bringing in Judkins.

Coe capitalized on Central's pitching miscues to open the sixth inning.  Nisenson was walked on five pitches to start the inning before senior Sean Raisch (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) was hit by a pitch.  With one out, senior Spencer Sobba (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) singled to left field and moved to second on the throw as Nisenson scored and Raisch scored on an error by the pitcher.  The Kohawks then got back-to-back walks from senior John Delaplane (Downers Grove, Ill./North) and junior JD Hunter (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina).  Following a pitching change for the Dutch, DeAngelis singled through the left side, bringing in Sobba.

Central left a runner on in the sixth inning before the Kohawks added the final two runs to the scoreboard.  Stein reached on an infield single to start the inning.  Nisenson then walked to move Stein to second before Raisch used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.  With two outs, Sobba doubled to left center, plating Nisenson and Stein.

DeAngelis led the Kohawks with three hits, while Stein and Sobba had two apiece.  Sobba drove in three runs, with Stein and Nisenson scoring twice apiece.  Freshman Connor Alberhasky (Iowa City, Iowa/City) improved to 2-1 on the mound.  In his first complete game, Alberhasky struck out six and gave up just one earned run on five hits.

The rubber match was an offensive struggle for both teams into extra innings.  Both teams left runners on base in the seventh and eighth innings, with the Kohawk runner being left in scoring position both times.  The Kohawks pushed the first run across the plate in the ninth inning, but left runners in scoring position to end the inning.  Hunter walked to start the inning before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeAngelis.  With two outs, Stein was intentionally walked.  Nisenson then singled through the left side, plating Hunter.

Central opened the bottom half of the ninth with a single to left field from Carson.  A sacrifice bunt by Ariola moved Carson to second.  Carson moved to third on a single to right field by Judkins, but an error by Coe let Carson tie the game.  With two outs, Judkins moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Kohawk error for the winning run.

Sobba led the Kohawks with two hits.  Raisch started the game and threw six shutout innings while giving up five hits and striking out two.  Freshman AJ Reuter (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) dropped to 0-2 on the hill, as he gave up two unearned runs in an inning and a third.

The Kohawks return to action on Tuesday, as they host Linn County rival Cornell.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Daniels Park.
