
ELMHURST, Ill. - After falling behind 2-1 after singles play, the Coe College men's tennis team rebounded for a 6-3 win over Elmhurst in regional play. The Kohawks were ranked 17th in the region, while Elmhurst was ranked 13th.
The Kohawks lone doubles win came at number two, as sophomore Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and sophomore Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) beat Vincent McPherson and Kevin Noble 8-6. Damisch and Woolf improved to 17-5 together on the year, while they have won seven of their last 10 matches. Coe lost the other two doubles matches 8-6.
At number two singles, senior Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) downed Will Jung 7-5, 7-5 while sophomore Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) beat McPherson 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Khristenko's win was the seventh in his last 10 matches. At number four singles, Damisch beat Luke Tanaka 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Noble 6-4, 6-2 at number five singles, while senior Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) beat Jim White 6-1, 7-6.
Coe returns to Iowa Conference action this week with a pair of road matches. Coe will travel to Cornell on Monday for a 4 p.m. match, while they face Luther on Friday at 3 p.m. in Decorah.
