
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead on Cornell after doubles play before sweeping all six singles matches for an 8-1 win over the Rams in Iowa Conference play Monday at Cornell.
The Kohawks opened with an 8-5 win at number one doubles from sophomore Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and sophomore Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) as they beat Justin Bradfield and Joseph Gelfand. Damisch was then a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gelfand at number four singles.
At number three doubles, junior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) beat Ashan DeSilva and Joseph Reyes 8-1. Newman then defeated Neal Klauer 6-0, 6-2 at number five singles.
Freshman Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) was a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) winner over DeSilva at number one singles. At number two singles, senior Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) beat Garrett Russikoff 7-5, 6-0. Sophomore Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at number three singles over Bradfield. At number six singles, senior Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) beat Reyes 6-4, 6-0.
The Kohawks wrap up Iowa Conference play on Friday, as they face undefeated Luther. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. in Decorah.
