CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team, ranked 17th in the Central Region, rallied to beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-4 Sunday at the Clark Racquet Center. The Warhawks entered the match ranked ninth in the region.
The Kohawks trailed 2-1 entering singles play, as Coe's lone win came at number three doubles. Senior Victor Khristenko (Orel, Russia) and junior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Erik Scanlan and Kevin Friend 8-5.
At number one singles, freshman Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) knocked off regionally-ranked Byron Balkin 7-6, 7-5. At number two singles, Khristenko beat Andrew Bayliss 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. With losses at number three and four singles, the Kohawks trailed 4-3 entering the final two singles matches.
Newman tied the match at four with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Scanlan at number five singles. Senior Jonathan Roger (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) sealed the win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at number six singles, as he beat Brady Porter.
The Kohawks return to action on Saturday in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament. Coe will be the number two seed in the event.
