INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team split a pair of duals on the opening day of the season Saturday. Coe dropped the opener 5-4 to William Jewel, but bounced back for a 9-0 win over Simpson.

The Kohawks trailed 2-1 after doubles against William Jewel, as senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) beat Kristen Stivers and Katy Lehenbauer 8-2 at number one doubles. Lucero also earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hana Lindbloom at number two singles.

Coe also earned wins from senior Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) at number three singles, as she beat Lehenbauer 5-7, 6-0, 11-9.  Coe's final win against William Jewel was from Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) at number six singles, as she beat Loree Hazelrigg 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.

In Coe's win over Simpson, Schupbach and Lucero beat Tiffany Bost and Allison Anderson 8-1 at number one doubles.  Ohlman and freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) won at number two doubles with an 8-3 win over Lindsay Nash and Kelli Ehrhardt.  The Kohawks extended their doubles lead to 3-0 with an 8-2 win at number three doubles from Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and Ferree.

Schupbach was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number one singles over Bost, while Lucero won 6-0, 6-0 at number two against Nash.  Ohlman took a 6-3, 6-3 decision from Ehrhardt at number three, as freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) beat Lauren Schemmel 6-1, 6-0 at number four singles.  Birky took a 6-1, 6-0 decision from Michelle Hartman at number five singles, while Hoffmann earned the final win with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Rami Vokt at number six singles.

The Kohawks return to action next Saturday, as they host Buena Vista. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Clark Racquet Center.
