CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team held a 2-1 lead on Cornell after doubles play, but used a win in all six singles matches for an 8-1 victory over the Rams.
At number one doubles, senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) beat Alyssa Zavislak and Kara Middleton 8-3. At number three doubles, senior Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) and junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) beat Ellie Purdy and Phoebe Milner 8-0.
Schupbach was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Ariana Hudson at number one singles. At number two singles, Lucero beat Samantha De Gannes 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Veron Hills) took a 6-2, 6-4 match from Zavislak.
At number four singles, freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) beat Middleton 6-1, 6-4, while sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) beat Purdy 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles. Hoffmann beat Claudia Landsman 6-2, 6-1 at number six singles.
The win improved the Kohawks to 4-1 overall. This was the fourth event in the new Bremner Cup Series featuring 17 sports between the schools. The women's tennis team joined the football, men's soccer and women's soccer teams with victories over the Rams, as they have taken a 4-0 lead in the series.
Coe returns to action on Sunday when they host Iowa Conference rival Luther. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at Clark Racquet Center.
