DECORAH, Iowa - Weather shortened play on the opening day of the IIAC Championships, but that didn't hamper the fine play by the Kohawk men in the season opener. Seven Kohawks advanced to the second round in Flight A Singles.
In Flight A Singles, top-seeded sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) opened his title defense with an 8-0 win over Simpson's Zach Kusick. Sprinkel will face Dubuque's Demetrius Johnson in the second round. Fifth-seeded senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) was an 8-4 winner over Loras' Brian Falvey. Newman will face teammate Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) in the second round, as Hickman beat Luther's Matt Bellio.
Sixth-seeded Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) opened the tournament with an 8-3 win over Buena Vista's Adam Gustad. Stokstad will face Luther's James Ayer in the second round. Seventh-seeded Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) advanced to the second round with an 8-0 win over Central's Collin Schares. Damisch will face Luther's Quinn Foley in the second round.
Freshman Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) knocked off eighth-seeded Yusuf Chowry of Wartburg 9-8 (8) in the first round. Decker will face Luther's Torstein Jystad in the second round. Freshman Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) beat Central's West Adelman 8-2 in the opening round. In the second round, Galbraith will face Wartburg's Blayne Willadsen.
Geoffrey Brochet advanced to the semifinals in the Flight B Singles bracket. In the opening round, Brochet, seeded third, beat Buena Vista's Kyle Shade 8-1. In the second round, Brochet beat Central's John Seier 8-3 before downing Luther's Sam Cychosz 8-4 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Brochet will face top-seeded Tim Kahl of Central. Second-seeded Alex Klaas (Douman, Wis./Catholic Memorial), fourth-seeded Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), eighth-seeded Daken Starkenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Scott Kleymann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) all won their opening round matches before falling in the second round.
All singles matches will be completed on Saturday, followed by the doubles tournament. Action begins at 9 a.m. in Decorah.
