SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Coe College women's tennis team advanced players in singles and doubles Friday on the opening day of the ITA Midwest Regionals. Coe has the top seeds in singles and top team in doubles play.
Top-seeded Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) opened the regionals with a 6-4, 6-0 win over St. Catherine's Mackenzie Weber. In the second round, Schupbach beat Bethel's Abby Edin 6-4, 6-0. In her first match on Saturday, Schupbach will face Grinnell's Shirlene Luk. On the bottom half of the bracket, fifth-seeded Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Macalester's Alisha Roopchand. In the next round, Lucero beat St. Olaf's Lisa Hall 6-2, 6-3. In her first match on Saturday, Lucero will face Wisconsin-Whitewater's Lauren Aguilar. In the singles consolation round, freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) defeated Macalester's Paige Schaefer 6-4, 6-1. She will face Carroll's Alyssa Larson Saturday.
After a first round bye, Schupbach and Lucero, the top-seed in doubles play, advanced with an 8-0 win over Carroll's Sarah Wick and Amanda Weckop. Coe's top duo will open play Saturday with a match against St. Thomas' Mary Allen and Bridget Noack.
Play will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
