SAINT PETER, Minn. - Senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regionals in doubles, while Lucero also advanced in singles.
Schupbach, the top-seed in the singles tournament, was upset in her first match on Saturday. Grinnell's Shirlene Luk beat Schupbach 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Lucero, seeded fifth on the singles side, advanced to the semifinals with two wins on Saturday. In her first match, she defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater's Lauren Aguilar 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Lucero knocked off second-seeded Sidney Divelbiss of Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals, Lucero will face ninth-seeded Laura Krull of Grinnell.
In doubles play, Schupbach and Lucero, the top-seeds, defeated Luther's Elise Allen and Maggie Helms 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater's Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale, the number five seed in the tournament. In the semifinals, Schupbach and Lucero will face third-seeded Taylor Heltne and Katie Gillman of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) advanced to the championships of the consolation bracket with three wins on Saturday. She defeated Carroll's Alyssa Larson 6-4, 6-0 before downing Helms 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-8. She advanced to the championship match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Allen.
The final day of the ITA Midwest Regionals is Sunday in St. Peter, Minn.
