MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Despite an early lead by the Kohawks, Cornell proved to be too much for Coe down the stretch at the Small Multi-Sport Center. It was the second loss of the season to the Rams for the Kohawks, as they fell 67-57.
Griffin LaDew hit a layup :47 into the game, which led to a storm of toilet paper hitting the floor from the Ram crowd. Senior
Kevin Dux (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) hit the first of two free throws and senior
Marc Gorenstein (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) hit a layup to give the Kohawks a 3-2 lead with 17:21 to play in the first half. LaDew then hit back-to-back 3-point baskets with 14:52 left in the first half that gave the Rams the lead for good.
Cornell twice increased its lead to 10 points in the first half before Coe cut the lead to eight points at the break. A 7-2 run by Cornell early in the second half put the lead up to 12, the largest of the game for either team. Coe fought back late in the second half, but couldn't cut the lead below five points for the Rams. Cornell went on a 6-2 run in the final 1:06 to seal the win.
Sophomore
Dan Borngraeber (Brookfield, Wis./East) led the Kohawks with 14 points off the bench. He also had a team-high six rebounds. Freshman
Jordan Cunningham (Mankato, Minn./East) added nine points off the bench. Sophomore
Alex Tatman (Humboldt, Iowa/Humboldt) dropped in eight points while junior
Cass Behrens (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) added seven.
The Kohawks shot poorly from 3-point range, connecting on just 2-of-19 attempts, while the Rams hit 33 percent of their shots from behind the arc. Cornell hit 4-of-8 treys in the first half, but struggled in the second half, hitting on just 1-of-7 attempts.
Coe returns to action on Saturday as they host Luther. The Norse beat Coe 71-52 in the first game of the 2009 portion of the schedule. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
