DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College track and field teams opened the season Saturday under new head coach Aaron Carley at the Sol Butler Classic. Coe won two events and turned in three top 50 heights or distances in the country.
Senior Stefani Wright (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) opened things up with a fourth place finish in the 55-meter dash, finishing in 7.59. Wright then won the 200-meter dash in 26.75. In the 600-meter run, senior Sara Heizer (Milliken, Colo./Roosevelt) was third in 1:47.62. Junior Taylor Wolf (West Branch, Iowa/West Branch) was eighth in the mile run with a time of 6:14.46, while senior Chelsey Thill (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior) was ninth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:18.64. Coe's 4x400-meter relay team of Wright, sophomore Kate Worthington (Waterloo, Iowa/West), Heizer and sophomore Amy Hurd (Wilton, Iowa/Wilton) were fourth in 4:24.09.
Senior Cassie Morigaki (Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) was fourth in the high jump at 5' 1". Her height is currently the 44th best in the country. Coe took fifth and sixth in the pole vault, as freshman Laura Bybee (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) jumped 9' 6 1/4" to place fifth, while senior Kristen Blodgett (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) was sixth at 8' 6 1/4". Freshman Kenzie Drahn (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) was seventh in the long jump at 15' 3/4". Junior Kirstin Franklin (Greeley, Colo./West) was third in the triple jump at 32' 11 1/4". Sophomore Kayla Rohr (Janesville, Wis./Craig) was 10th in the shot put with a throw of 31' 11 1/2". Coe was eighth and ninth in the weight throw, as junior Chelsea Arrendondo (Des Moines, Iowa/I-35) was eighth at 39' 1 1/4", while Rohr was ninth at 36' 11 3/4".
On the men's side, sophomore Kaleb Bloomer (Madrid, Iowa/Madrid) was 10th in the 200-meter dash in 24.73. Coe was ninth and 10th in the 600-meter run, as freshman Tyler Knipp (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) and freshman Nate Wood (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North) was 10th. Knipp ran a 1:29.39, while Wood finished in 1:30.03. Senior Andrew Dewar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) won the 3,000-meter run in 8:53.74, while junior Shea Devine (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) was fourth in 8:59.79. Coe took seventh and eighth in the 55-meter hurdles, as sophomore Bryan Stanford (Montezuma, Iowa/Montezuma) was seventh in 8.53 with freshman Akira Allen (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview) placing eight in 8.58.
In the triple jump, sophomore Alexis Kombwa (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) was fourth at 42' 9 1/2", the 48th best jump in the country. Senior Eric Ritter (Iowa City, Iowa/West) was fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 47' 10 1/2", the 45th best throw in the nation.
The Kohawk women placed fifth with 36.5 points, while the men were fifth with 23 points. Coe returns to action Jan. 26 at the Cornell Quad in Mount Vernon.
