CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team opened the spring season Saturday with a pair of victories. The Kohawks defeated Wis.-Eau Claire 9-0 before downing Principia 8-1.
In the opener against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Coe's top doubles team of sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Ryan Vande Linde and Joe Meier 8-6. Sprinkel also earned a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Vande Linde at number one singles. Newman was a 6-0, 6-3 victor over Michael Roden at number four singles.
At number two singles, freshman Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Yasushi Inoue (Japan) defeated Roden and David Stingley 8-6. Galbraith then defeated Florent Marco 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles, while Inoue downed Meier 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles.
Coe's third doubles win came at number three, where senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) defeated Marco and Zack Katz 8-1. Stokstad also picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Braden Parman at number five singles. Coe's ninth win came from freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) at number six singles, as he defeated Stingley 6-1, 6-4.
The Kohawks also went 3-0 in doubles against Principia. Newman and Sprinkel earned an 8-5 victory over Joey Sander and Jason Wissman at number one. Junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and junior Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) beat Kevin Hagenlocher and Andrew Rohrer 8-3 at number two. Coe's final doubles win came from freshman Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) and freshman Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), as they beat Aaron Switzer and Andrew Fields 8-3 at number three doubles.
Galbraith earned a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Sander at number one singles. At number two, Inoue defeated Wisman 6-1, 6-0. Hickman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Rohrer at number four. Coe won the final two matches, as freshman Geoffrey Brochet (France) defeated Switzer 6-2, 6-0. Decker closed out the meet with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Fields at number six singles.
Coe returns to action next Saturday, as they host Wisconsin-La Crosse and Monmouth. Coe will face the Eagles at 9 a.m. and the Fighting Scots at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Clark Racquet Center.
