CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the year Saturday with a 7-2 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse and a 9-0 victory over Monmouth.
Coe opened the match with Wisconsin-La Crosse with three doubles victories. At number one doubles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Kevin McMillen and Dante Pitera 8-2. Newman was also a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Kyle McGrane at number three singles.
At number two doubles, freshmen Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Yasushi Inoue (Japan) defeated Vic Mirasola and Anthony Mirasola 8-1. Galbraith also earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Vic Mirasola at number two singles.
Junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) and senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) were 8-5 winners over Stefan DeLong and McGrane at number three doubles. Coe also earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory from freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) at number five singles, where he defeated Travis Murphy. Junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) closed the dual with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Nick Skanavis at number six singles.
In the match with Monmouth, Coe opened with three-straight doubles wins once again. The Kohawks are 12-0 in doubles in dual meets this season. At number one, Sprinkel and Newman improved to 11-1 together, as they defeated David Stewart and David Johnson 8-6. At number two doubles, Stokstad and Janssen beat Chris Franco and Marco Franco 8-2. Coe's third doubles victory came from Damisch and junior Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine), as they beat Alex King and Andrew Shiakallis 8-0.
At number one singles, Galbraith improved to 10-2 in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over C. Franco. Inoue earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Johnson at number two singles. At number three, Hickman defeated Stewart 6-2, 6-2.
Damisch earned a 7-6, 6-4 victory at number four singles against M. Franco. At number five singles, freshman Geoffrey Brochet (France) improved to 7-0 on the year with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over King. Freshman Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) closed the dual with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shiakallis at number six singles.
Coe returns to action next Saturday with three duals. A portion of the Kohawks will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face Kalamazoo. Coe will also have a team at home hosting Westminster and Buena Vista. Coe will face Westminster at 9 a.m. and Buena Vista at 5 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
