CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College swimming and diving teams turned in two of the top five times and scores in school history on Thursday during the first day of the Liberal Arts Championships.
Coe opened the night with the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. Coe's team of junior Andi Queisner (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison), senior Kelly Strohm (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Regis Jesuit), sophomore Kenni Sterns (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) and sophomore Lindsay Meade (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) were sixth in the A Final in 1:45.71. On the men's side, Coe's team of freshman Gabe Etzel (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), senior Aaron Babbitt (Rancho Santa Mar, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), sophomore Aaron Buseman (Niwot, Colo./Niwot) and freshman Matt Thoma (Newton, Iowa/Newton) were eighth in the A Final in 1:38.96.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Meade was eighth in the A Final in 5:31.56 after swimming a 5:30.59 in the prelims. In the 200-yard IM, Sterns was 12th overall and fourth in the B Final in 2:23.58 after turning in a 2:22.99 in the prelims. Queisner turned in the fifth best time in school history in the 50-yard freestyle in the prelims with a 25.37, but upped that to the fourth best time in the finals with a 25.23.
On the women's three-meter diving board, senior Rebecca Herman (Iowa City, Iowa/West) upped her career-best to 380.95 in the prelims, the fifth best in school history. In the finals, Herman scored a 377.95, placing fifth. Senior Elizabeth Curley (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) was fifth with a 299, while freshman Kendallyn Recker (Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn) was sixth with a 290.10. On the men's one-meter board, freshman Cody Bauman (Morengo, Ill./Morengo) was seventh with a score of 269.30, while freshman Daniel Bradley (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Union) was eighth with a 240.05.
As a team, the Kohawk women are in fifth with 98 points, while the men are in ninth with 45 points. Luther leads the field on both sides with 342 points for the women and 213 points for the men. The second day of the championships starts at 10 a.m. Friday at the Coe Natatorium.
