KALAMAZOO, Mich. & CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team split up the squad Saturday and brought home three victories, including a road win over 30th-ranked Kalamazoo College.
In Coe's victory over Kalamazoo, the Kohawks remained undefeated in doubles, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The first victory came at number two, as freshman Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and freshman Yasushi Inoue (Japan) defeated Max Manley and Robert Hudson 8-3. At number three doubles, senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Loudres) defeated David DeSimone and Alan Faber 8-4. Coe's third doubles win came at number one, as the regionally-ranked duo of sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Steve Hanselman and Peter Rothstein 8-4.
The Kohawks took a 4-0 lead as Inoue defeated Mike Korn 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles. Coe locked up the victory at number one singles, as Sprinkel defeated Rothstein 6-4, 6-3. After dropping the first set, Newman bounced back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over DeSimone at number four. Coe's final win came at number six, as freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) defeated Matthew Colaptinto 6-2, 6-0.
Back in Cedar Rapids, the Kohawks earned a 7-2 victory over Westminster before defeating St. Ambrose 9-0. Junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and junior Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) opened with an 8-3 victory over Tony Stephenson and Anthony Becker at number one doubles. Woolf was also a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Steven Yob at number four singles.
At number two doubles, junior Alex Klaas (Douman, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and junior Daken Starkenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Tyler Wollershauser and Yob 8-4. Coe's final doubles victory came at number three, where freshman Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) and freshman Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) defeated Nathan Connell and Kyle Tolbert 8-3. Decker also earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Becker at number three singles, while Kroll defeated Connell 7-5, 6-1 at number five singles. Coe's final win was a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number two singles by freshman Geoffrey Brochet (France), as he defeated Wollmershauser.
Coe closed the day with a 9-0 victory over St. Ambrose. Damisch and Woolf opened doubles play with an 8-4 victory over Sam O'Donnell and Luke Wood at number one. Damisch was also a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Santiago Gonzalez at number one singles. At number two doubles, Klaas and Starkenburg defeated Gonzalez and John Rohlf 8-0. Starkenburg also earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Brandyn Ambrosy at number five singles.
At number three doubles, Kroll and Brochet defeated Ambrosy and Rob Laudman 8-0. Kroll was also a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Rohlf at number four singles, while Brochet defeated O'Donnell 6-1, 6-4 at number two. At number three singles, Decker defeated Wood 6-2, 6-3, while sophomore Scott Kleymann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) defeated Laudman 6-3, 6-1 at number six singles.
The Kohawks return to action next Saturday, as they host Carthage and Buena Vista. Coe will face the Redmen at 9 a.m., while opening Iowa Conference play against the Beavers at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Clark Racquet Center.
