
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Neither team led by more than seven points in a back-and-forth game, as Loras beat Coe 69-65 in overtime of an Iowa Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game Tuesday night.
Coe jumped out to its largest lead of the game in the first half, as the Kohawks scored seven-straight points to take a 12-5 lead with 14:14 to play in the first half. Coe held on to the seven point lead with 8:45 to play in the first half when the Duhawks scored 14-straight points, taking a 25-18 lead with 4:49 to play in the opening half. A jumper by junior Mary Halvorson (Waterville, Iowa/Waukon) with 2:06 to play in the opening half cut the lead to three, but Loras scored the final four points of the half to take a 31-24 lead into the break.
Halvorson hit back-to-back jumpers to start the second half, as Coe scored nine of the first 11 points in 2:33 of the half, tying the game at 33. A free throw from junior Mackenzie Reed (Iowa City, Iowa/West) with 12:40 to play cut the lead to 40-39, but the Duhawks scored the next six points, taking a 46-39 lead with 9:23 to play. With 7:30 to play, sophomore Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) scored five-straight points, followed by a jumper from Halvorson, as Coe tied the game at 50 with 4:11 to play.
With the game tied at 52, Loras' Rachel Kerchefske hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 to play, as Loras took a 55-52 lead. The Kohawks had an answer with :40 to play, as senior Kelsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. A layup from Melissa Herrmann gave Loras a 57-55 lead, but Coe would tie the game once again as Halvorson hit a pair of free throws with :05 to play, sending the game to overtime.
Kelly Rogowski scored the first four points of overtime, as the Duhawks never trailed in the extra frame. Coe cut the lead to one on a jumper by Reed with :17 to play, but weren't able to score again. Kerchefske hit a pair of free throws with under a second to play to give Loras the 69-65 victory.
Halvorson led the Kohawks with a career-high 20 points. Hayes and Reed joined her in double figures with 18 and 12 points respectively, while junior Hannah Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) had seven points. Breitbach moved into eighth on Coe's career 3-pointers list with 68.
Hayes led the Kohawks with seven rebounds, while Halvorson had five. Junior Lindsey Buckles (Davenport, Iowa/West) had four rebounds. K. Jipp led the Kohawks with a game-high four assists, while sophomore Lindsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and senior Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) had three assists apiece. Hayes blocked two shots, as she moved into four on the career blocked shots list with 89 and fifth on the single-season list with 37. Playing in her final game, K. Jipp moved into second on Coe's games played list with 111.
The loss dropped Coe to 1-7 all-time in the quarterfinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament. In the history of the Iowa Conference Tournament, the number five seed is now 2-14 all-time.
