
WAVERLY, Iowa - Wartburg used an early 11-0 run and never looked back on Tuesday, as the Knights beat Coe College 64-54 in an Iowa Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game Tuesday night.
Following a basket by senior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) to tie the game at two with 17:20 to play in the first half, Wartburg went on an 11-0 run in the next 5:09, taking a 13-2 lead with 12:00 to play in the half. A 9-4 run by Coe cut the lead to six with 9:46 to play in the half. Junior Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) scored with 2:05 to play, but Wartburg scored the final four points of the half to take a 34-22 lead at the break.
Thomas Perkins hit a 3-pointer for the Knights with 19:06 to play, extending the lead to 37-22, the largest of the game for the Knights. A basket by Light and a 3-pointer by senior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) shortened the lead back to 10, but Wartburg responded with five-straight points of their own.
Wirth led the Kohawks with 14 points, while Light and sophomore Max Schmarzo (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) had nine points apiece. Light had seven rebounds, while Wirth had five. Light moved into ninth on Coe's single-season rebounds list with 220 this year. Eddie Diemer led the Knights with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Light and Wirth led the Kohawks with three assists apiece, while sophomore JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) had two. Senior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) had three steals, while Wirth and senior Garrett Cross (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) had two. Mataloni played just 16 minutes after being injured late in the first half. Wirth moved into ninth on Coe's career steals list with 94. Light finished with one block, moving into third on Coe's single-season list with 33.
The Knights held a 50-31 advantage in rebounds. Coe shot 29.8 percent (17-of-57), while Wartburg was 24-of-58 (41.4%). Wartburg held a 36-12 advantage in the paint, while outscoring Coe 18-6 on second chance points. The loss dropped Coe to 0-10 all-time on the road in the Iowa Conference Tournament.
