CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team cruised its ninth-straight win on Saturday. The Kohawks opened the day with an 8-1 victory over Carthage before beating Buena Vista 9-0 in the nightcap.
Coe lost its first doubles match of the year in dual play against the Redmen, but the Kohawks held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At number two, freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) and freshman Yasushi Inoue (Japan) defeated Brandon Curtis and Conor Moon 8-1. Hickman was also a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Juan Robles at number five singles, while Inoue defeated Ryan Jump 7-6, 6-0 at number three singles.
At number three doubles, junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and freshman Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) defeated Jump and Brian Howes 8-5. Galbraith was also a 7-5, 6-0 winner over Alex Boomgarden at number two singles, while Damisch beat Tom Klassman 6-1, 6-0 at number six singles. Coe's other two victories came at number one and four singles. At number one, sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Jeff Lotz Jr. 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, while senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) beat Howes 6-0, 6-2 at number four singles.
In the final match of the day, Coe opened Iowa Conference play with a 9-0 victory over Buena Vista. At number one doubles, senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) defeated Adam Gustad and Kyle Shade 8-2. Stokstad also earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Shade at number two singles, while Janssen defeated Cole Renken 6-2, 6-0 at number three singles.
At number two doubles, Hickman and junior Michael Woolf (Palantine, Ill./Palantine) beat Renken and Jason Ehrhardt 8-2. Coe's third doubles win came from freshmen Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) and Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), as they defeated Christian Price and Dillon Nevius 8-1. Decker was also a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Price at number five singles, while Kroll defeated Nevius 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles. Coe also earned singles wins at number one and four. At number one, Galbraith defeated Gustad 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Geoffrey Brochet (France) defeated Ehrhardt 6-1, 6-2 at number four.
The Kohawks return to action March 4, as they have eight matches in Orlando, Florida during spring break.
