HANOVER PARK, Ill. - The Coe College women's tennis team opened its spring season on Saturday with a pair of victories over Calvin and Wheaton. Coe beat Calvin 9-0 before downing the Thunder 6-3.
The Kohawks opened the day with a 9-0 victory over Calvin. At number one doubles, senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) defeated Megan Visser and Bethany Zoerhof 8-1. Lucero was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Visser at number one singles, while Schupbach defeated Jordan ipema 6-0, 6-1 at number two singles.
At number two doubles, sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) defeated Ipema and Elise Doezema 8-6. Ferree also earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Samantha Reitsma at number five singles. At number three doubles, senior Sara Ohlman (Washington, Ill./Washington) and junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) beat Ali Roode and Reitsma 8-1. Hoffmann also picked up a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Doezema at number six singles. Coe also earned a pair of singles wins at number three and four. At number three, freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) defeated Roode 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) defeated Bethany Zoerhof 6-2, 6-1.
Coe's last match of the day featured two regionally ranked teams, as Wheaton was 10th and Coe was 11th. The Kohawks took a 2-1 lead after doubles, earning victories at number one and two. At number one, Lucero and Schupbach improved to 13-1 overall and 9-0 in duals with an 8-6 win over Sarah Ray and Julie Buursma. At number two, Poynter and Birky defeated Kristin Boyer and Marissa Shults 9-7.
Lucero improved to 14-1 overall and 10-0 in duals with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Ray at number one singles. With a 6-2, 6-2 win over Boyer at number two singles, Schupbach improved to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in duals. Sebastian earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Shults at number four, as she improved to 14-3 overall and 10-1 in duals. Coe's final victory came at number five, as Ohlman won her seventh-straight singles match, defeating Julia Carey 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (2-4).
The Kohawks return to action March 4, as they play four matches in Orlando, Florida over spring break.
