ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College women's tennis team won its 11th-straight match on Monday, as they opened their spring break trip with a 5-4 victory over NCAA Division II Stonehill.
The Kohawks held a 2-1 lead over Stonehill after doubles play. At number one doubles, junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) defeated Meryl Lawrence and Paige Frost 8-3. Lucero was also a 7-6, 6-1 winner over Bailey Paradiso at number one singles.
At number two doubles, freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) defeated Paradiso and Analise Kump 8-5. Poynter also earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kump at number three singles.
The final win for the Kohawks came at number two singles, as freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) defeated Lawrence 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Stonehill entered the match ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, while the Kohawks were ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III Central Regional rankings. Coe improved to 11-1 with the victory, while it was the first loss in nine outings this year for Stonehill.
The Kohawks return to action on Tuesday with a pair of matches against Christopher Newport and Meredith.
