ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College women's tennis team defeated two regionally-ranked opponents on Tuesday, as they improved to 13-1 on the year with their 13th-straight victory.
The Kohawks opened the day with a 7-2 victory over Christopher Newport. At number one doubles, senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) defeated Kim Morrissett and Marion Gloor 8-0. Schupbach also earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Morrissett at number one singles.
Coe's second doubles victory came at number two, as freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) downed Melisande Downs and Jodi Noland 8-1. Birky also picked up a 7-5, 6-2 victory at number four singles over Downs.
The Kohawks took a 3-0 lead after doubles play with an 8-4 win from junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) over Jackie Gaine and Angela Stallman. Ferree also defeated Gaine 6-2, 6-4 at number five singles. At number two singles, freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) Defeated Gloor 6-0, 6-1.
Coe closed the day with an 8-1 victory over Meredith. At number one doubles, Schupbach and Lucero defeated Puja Patel and Caroline Hunt 8-1. Lucero was also a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Patel at number one singles, while Schupbach defeated Hunt 6-0, 6-0 at number two.
At number three doubles, Hoffmann and Ferree defeated Taylor Brennan and Mary Lawrence Newton 8-2. Ferree also defeated Mollie Musgrave 6-4, 6-4 at number five singles. Sebastian picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Newton at number three singles, while Birky downed Bettey Edwards 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 at number four singles. Coe's final victory came from freshman Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) as she defeated Brennan 6-2, 6-3.
The Kohawks will wrap up their spring break trip on Thursday, as they face Grand Valley State and Berry in the Orlando, Fla. area.
