ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College men's tennis team won three matches on Tuesday, as they improved to 14-0 to start the season. The Kohawks have won all five matches during their trip to Florida.
Coe opened the day with a 6-3 victory over Christopher Newport. The Kohawks held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Coe's first win came at number one, as sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Kyle Tobin and Will Sloan 8-5. Sprinkel was also a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Tobin at number one singles, while Newman defeated Robbie Wagner 7-5, 6-3 at number four singles.
At number two doubles, freshmen Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Yasushi Inoue (Japan) downed Chiraag Shetty and Wagner 8-5. Inoue also earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Joey Manilla at number three singles. Coe's last win came from freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson), as he defeated Joona Rahko 6-3, 6-1 at number six singles.
Coe's second win of the day came against King's College, as the Kohawks won 8-0. At number two doubles, junior Alex Klaas (Douman, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and junior Daken Starkenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Bobby Buttafogo and Chris DiMino 8-2. Klaas also earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over DiMinio at number four singles, while Starkenburg beat Jake Rohring 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 at number three singles.
At number three singles, junior Alex Leovic (Littleton, Colo./Littleton) and sophomore Scott Kleymann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) defeated Nick Conte and Brandon Franklin 8-3. Leovic also defeated P.T. Romano 6-3, 6-2 at number six singles, while Kleymann downed Andrew Panzitta 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles. Coe's final win came from Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View), as he defeated Buttafogo 6-2, 6-4.
In the final win of the day, Coe defeated Clark 9-0. At number one doubles, Sprinkel and Newman downed Diego Angel and Dan Hall 8-3. Junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and junior Michael Woolf (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) defeated Daniel Stein and Zach Goodstein 8-5. Damisch also picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Goodstein at number four singles.
At number three doubles, Hickman and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) defeated Harris Rollinger and Phillip Porter 8-2. Hickman also defeated Antoine Martin 7-6, 6-1 at number three singles, while Janssen downed Spencer Brightman 6-1, 6-1 at number six singles.
Galbraith was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Angel at number one singles, while Inoue defeated Stein 7-5, 6-2 at number two singles. Freshman Geoffrey Brochet (France) downed Rollinger 6-3, 6-0 at number five singles.
Coe will play its final three matches of the spring trip on Thursday, as they face Grand Valley State, Ohio Northern and Berry in the Orlando, Fla. area.
