ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College women's tennis team saw its 13-match winning streak snapped by nationally-ranked Grand Valley State, an NCAA Division II school, but bounced back for a victory over Berry on Thursday.
In the loss to Grand Valley State, junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) picked up Coe's only win at number one singles. Lucero defeated Niki Shipman 7-5, 6-4. Coe had two matches go three sets, while the number one doubles match was 8-6. The Lakers were ranked 38th in the nation in division II and fourth in their region.
Coe bounced back in its final match of the spring trip with a 6-3 victory over Berry. Coe won all three doubles matches. At number one doubles, Lucero and senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) defeated Jenn Tinnell and Emma O'Reilly 8-1. Schupbach also defeated Tinnell 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 at number one singles.
At number two doubles, freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) downed Cailtlin Smith and Kaleigh Carpenter 8-5. Coe's final doubles victory came at number three, as junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) defeated Heidi Seabaugh and Lib Lockett 8-3. Hoffmann was also a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Carpenter at number four singles. Coe's final victory of the match came at number three singles, as freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) defeated Smith 6-2, 6-1.
The Kohawks (14-2) will return to action March 16 against Augustana. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
