CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team ran its winning streak to 18-straight matches to open the 2013 season, as they defeated Augustana 9-0 on Saturday.
Coe opened the day with an 8-2 win at number one doubles, as senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Andy Wall and Lawrence Palmer. Sprinkel also earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Palmer at number one singles, while Newman defeated Wall 6-4, 4-6, 10-1 at number four singles.
At number two doubles, freshmen Yasushi Inoue (Japan) and Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Will Palmer and Colin Arnold 8-4. Galbraith also beat Harald Olsson 6-4, 6-4 at number two singles, while Inoue defeated Will Palmer 6-3, 6-1 at number three singles.
The Kohawks closed out doubles play with a 9-8 victory at number three, as junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) and senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) defeated Jack Cullen and Kevin Bayles. Stokstad was also a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Bayles at number five singles. Coe's final victory came at number six singles, as freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) downed Arnold 6-1, 6-1.
Coe returns to action next Saturday, as they host Central in Iowa Conference play. The match is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
