CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the seventh time this year, the Coe College women's tennis team pitched a shutout on Sunday. Coe improved to 16-3 overall with a 9-0 win over Upper Iowa.
The Kohawks opened doubles play with an 8-3 win at number one, as senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) defeated Karli Loewecke and Paige Olson. Lucero was also a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Loewecke at number one singles, while Schupbach defeated Olson 6-3, 6-3 at number two singles.
At number two doubles, freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Prep) and freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) downed Nicole Pothen and Rosangel Espinoza 9-7. Birky also earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Espinoza at number four singles.
Coe's final doubles victory came at number three, as freshman Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./NoCo) and sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) defeated Meredith Worrall and Laura Alvarez 8-1. Ferree also earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Worrall at number five singles. The Kohawks also earned a singles victory from freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) at number three, as she defeated Pothen 6-1, 6-2. The final victory of the day came at number six singles, as junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) defeated Alvarez 6-3, 6-0.
The Kohawks return to action April 7, as they host Grinnell.
