CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - It was all Kohawks Saturday in a match featuring the last 12 Iowa Conference men's tennis champions at the Clark Racquet Center as Coe downed Luther 8-1 in league play.
Coe opened the match with an 8-5 victory at number one doubles as sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) defeated Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley. Newman also earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory at number four singles over James Ayer.
At number two doubles, freshmen Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Yasushi Inoue (Japan) downed Ayer and Nick Mozena 8-3. Galbraith downed Mozena 6-4, 6-0 at number two singles while Inoue defeated Matthew Bellio 6-0, 6-2 at number three singles.
Coe's final doubles victory came at number three as senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) downed Bellio and Sean Brown 9-7. Stokstad also earned a 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 win over Torstein Jystad at number five singles. The final Kohawk victory of the day game at number six singles as freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) defeated Foley 6-1, 6-1.
The Kohawks will put their 20-match win streak on the line Sunday, as they host Grinnell. Coe is ranked ninth in the central region, while the Pioneers are ranked 14th. The match begins at 11 a.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
