DECORAH, Iowa - It took extra innings in the opener and a four-run inning in the nightcap for the Coe College baseball team to complete the four-game series sweep of Luther Monday.
After a scoreless seven innings, the Kohawks struck first in the eighth inning of game one. Sophomore Jory Heckenberg (Stockport, Iowa/Van Buren) reached on an error by the shortstop to start the inning. With freshman Craig Konrardy (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) pinch running for Heckenberg, senior Patton Hofer (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Konrardy to second. With two outs, senior JD Hunter (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) singled to plate Konrardy. Hunter moved to second on the throw home. Senior Nick Stein (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) was intentionally walked before sophomore Michael Goerdt (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) reached on an error by the first baseman, allowing Hunter to score. The Norse added a run on two hits in the bottom half of the inning, but left a runner on third to end the game.
Hunter led the Kohawks with two hits in the opener, while freshman Ben Larison (Robins, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and sophomore AJ Reuter (Monticello, Iowa/Monticello) had the other two. Sophomore Connor Alberhasky (Iowa City, Iowa/City) went the distance on the mound, as he improved to 2-1 on the year. Alberhasky struck out five while giving up five hits and one earned run.
Luther scored a run in the second and third innings of the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Stein hit a home run, cutting the Norse lead to 2-1.
The Kohawks came out firing in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two hits, but left two on base. Reuter was hit by a pitch to start the inning before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heckenberg. Freshman Michael Redmond (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) walked before Konrardy doubled to right center, plating Reuter and Redmond to give the Kohawks a 3-2 lead. A single by Hofer moved Konrardy to third, while Hofer moved to second on the throw. With two outs, Konrardy scored on a wild pitch before Hofer scored on a passed ball.
Luther scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth, as they cut the Coe lead to 5-3. Coe added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Konrardy led off the inning with a triple. In the next at-bat, Hofer singled to plate Konrardy for the final run of the game.
Konrardy and Hofer had two hits apiece for the Kohawks, while Larison and Stein had the other two hits for Coe. Sophomore Kyle Brady (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley) picked up his first win as a Kohawk, tossing four innings on the hill. He struck out one while giving up one earned run on four hits. Reuter earned his first save of the year, throwing three innings. Reuter struck out four while giving up an earned run on four hits.
Coe was originally scheduled to play Buena Vista on Tuesday at Daniels Park. The threat of weather has forced that game to be postponed. A set date has not been determined, but it will be played before the next Tuesday deadline set by the Iowa Conference. As of now, Coe will return to action on Friday and Saturday, as they host Central in a four-game series at Daniels Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. both days.
