CEDAR RAPIDS/DUBUQUE, Iowa - Using split squads, the Coe College men's tennis team ran its winning streak to 23-straight matches Friday with a pair of wins over Loras and Dubuque.
At the Clark Racquet Center, the Kohawks earned their 10th shutout of the season, as they defeated Loras 9-0. At number one singles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and freshman Yasushi Inoue (Japan) defeated Jon Moore and Brian Falvey 8-1. Inoue also earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Moore at number one singles, while Newman was a 7-6, 6-0 winner over Falvey at number two singles.
Coe's second doubles win came from junior Jeff Damisch (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and junior Michael Woolf (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) at number two, as they defeated Ulises Hernandez and Noah Schmall 8-0. Damisch also earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Schmall at number three singles, while Woolf defeated Hernandez 6-1, 6-0 at number four singles.
At number three doubles, junior Alex Klaas (Douman, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and junior Daken Starkenburg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) downed Jeff Kasel and Garett Prusha 8-1. Starkenburg also defeated Kasel 6-2, 6-1 at number five singles, while Klaas downed Prusha 6-4, 6-1 at number six singles.
In Dubuque, the Kohawks jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles before winning all six singles matches. At number one doubles, junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) and senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) defeated Demetrius Johnson and Shawn Iben 8-6. Stokstad was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Nikolay Gospodinov at number two singles, while Janssen beat Dishon Derring 6-3, 6-1 at number four singles.
At number two doubles, freshmen Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) and Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Deering and Trevor Calahan 8-1. Galbraith then beat Johnson 6-2, 6-2 at number one singles, while Hickman downed Michael Braden 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles.
The Kohawks earned two more singles victories at five and six. At number five, freshman Zack Decker (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) downed Iben 6-0, 6-2, while freshman Mark Kroll (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) defeated Calahan 6-0, 6-2 at number six.
Coe, ranked ninth in the central region, return to action on Sunday for a pair of matches. The Kohawks will host Carleton, ranked eighth in the central region, at Noon at the Clark Racquet Center. Coe will also have a team traveling to Indianola for an 11 a.m. match against Simpson.
