CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the first time this season, the Coe College women's tennis team lost to an NCAA Division III school, as 26th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated the Kohawks 7-2.
The Warhawks took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Coe's lone doubles win came at number one, as senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus) and junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) defeated Sydney Divelbiss and Alexandra Bayliss 8-6. Coe put up a fight and two and three doubles, dropping 8-4 and 8-5 decisions respectively.
Coe's lone singles win came at number one. In a match between two players ranked in the ITA Central Region, Lucero defeated Divelbiss 7-5, 3-6, 10-4. Lucero was ranked eighth in the region, while Divelbiss was ranked sixth. Lucero improved to 20-3 with the victory.
The Kohawks (17-4, 7-0 IIAC) return to action April 27 as they host the Iowa Conference NCAA Qualifier Tournament. After a first round bye, Coe is scheduled to host the winner of the Simpson-Central match at 9 a.m. The winner of the six-team tournament will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
