CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two top-ten teams in the latest ITA Central Region rankings squared off Sunday at the Clark Racquet Center, where the Kohawks downed the Knights 7-2 for their 24th-straight victory.
The Kohawks opened the match with a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At number one doubles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) downed Paul Cooper and Andrew Hwang 8-4. It was the ninth-straight win for the Kohawk duo, as they improved to 22-3 on the year. Sprinkel also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexander Chin at number one singles, while Newman earned a 4-6, 7-6, 5-1 (retired) victory at number five singles over Erik Johnson. It was the sixth-straight singles win for Newman.
At number two doubles, freshmen Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) and Yasushi Inoue (Japan) downed Chin and Austin Jiang 8-6. Inoue also earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at number three singles over Cooper. It was the 15th-straight singles victory for Inoue, as he improved to 18-3 on the year.
Coe also got a pair of three-set victories at five and six singles. At number five, senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) downed Johnson 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 for his sixth-straight singles victory. Coe's final singles victory came at number six, where freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) defeated Nelson Wolf 6-1, 5-7, 10-8. It was the 16th-straight singles win for Hickman, as he improved to 18-2.
The Kohawks will have the week off before facing Simpson and Cornell next Sunday. Coe will travel to Simpson for a 1 p.m. match, while they will host Cornell at 1 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
