WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe women's basketball team clinched the final berth in the Iowa Conference Tournament with a 60-56 win over the Wartburg Knights Wednesday night. Coe was led by three players in double-digits.
Neither team could gain the upper edge in the first half, as the Knights took a 28-27 lead into the locker rooms. Coe took a one-point lead on a 3-point basket by freshman
Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) with 14:45 to play.
The Knights then rattled off 11-straight points to take a 10 point lead with 9:52 to play. After a timeout by the Kohawks, they made it a game once again. Ware once again hit a 3-point basket that sparked a 13-2 run over the next 4:56 by the Kohawks to put them in front. After a pair of free throws by Wartburg's Sharese Van Sloten with 2:32 to play, Coe finished the game on a 10-5 run to seal the victory.
Sophomores
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) and
Brittany Norris (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) led the Kohawks with 15 points apiece, while Ware added 14 points off the bench on 4-for-7 shooting from downtown. Norris moved into sixth on the single-season scoring chart with 348 points.
Lincoln and Norris combined for five blocked shots as Lincoln moved into second on the single-season blocked shots list with 39. Sophomore
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) dished out a game-high five assists to move her into fifth on the single-season assists list with 115. Lincoln and sophomore
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) both dished out four assists. Breitbach and Anciaux combined for five steals.
The Kohawks will return to action on Saturday as they close out the regular season against Simpson. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Indianola.
