WHEATON, Ill. - The Coe College men's tennis team started its weekend three-day road trip with an 8-1 win over Wheaton in a match featuring two regionally ranked teams.
The Kohawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. At number one doubles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Ryan Kreis and Josh Ward 8-1. It was the 11th-straight win for the top Kohawk pair. Newman also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Miles Greenwald at number four singles.
At number two doubles, freshmen Yasushi Inoue (Kokubunji, Tokyo/Waseda) and Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed David Buursma and Greenwald 8-4. At number two singles, Galbraith downed Ward 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, while Inoue defeated Buursma 7-5, 6-3 at number three singles. It was the 17th-straight singles victory for Inoue.
Coe's final doubles victory came at number three. Senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) beat Derek Mumaw and John Bodett 8-5. Coe's final two singles victories came at five and six.
At number five, freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) downed Muman 6-2, 7-5. Hickman improved to 19-0 in singles play in dual meets this year. At number six singles, freshman Geoffrey Brochet (Valenciennes, France/Valenciennes) defeated Bodett 6-3, 6-4. It was the 17th-straight doubles victory for Brochet, as he improved to 17-0.
The Kohawks (28-0) return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Elmhurst in Elmhurst, Ill. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
