ELMHURST, Ill. - In its closest match since spring break, the Coe College men's tennis team won its 29th-straight match on Saturday, as they defeated Elmhurst 6-3.
Coe took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At number two doubles, freshmen Yasushi Inoue (Kokubunji, Tokyo/Waseda) and Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Luke Tanaka and Chris Harrison 8-2. Inoue also picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vincent McPherson at number three singles. It was the 18th-straight singles victory for Inoue on the year, as he improved to 21-3.
At number three doubles, senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) defeated McPherson and Kevin Noble 8-4. Stokstad also downed Quinn Jennings 6-4, 6-3 at number five singles.
The Kohawks' final two singles wins came at number one and four. At number one, sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) downed Alex Harbert 6-4, 6-3, while senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) downed Tanaka 6-2, 6-4. It was the ninth-straight singles victory for Newman.
Coe (29-0) looks to complete the perfect regular season in its finale tomorrow. The Kohawks will travel to 28th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater for a 10 a.m. match.
