CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's tennis team picked up its 30th win of the year on Saturday, as it defeated Wartburg 5-0 in the semifinals of the IIAC Automatic Qualifier Tournament.
The Kohawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. At number one doubles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Eric Hilpert and Blayne Willadsen 8-2. Coe went up 2-0 as freshmen Yasushi Inoue (Kokubunji, Tokyo/Waseda) and Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) downed Yusuf Chowdhry and Brian Rasmussen 8-3. The final doubles win came at number three, as senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) beat Josh Trueblood and Dayton Stevens 8-5.
Coe's two singles wins came at two and three. At number two, freshman Riley Galbraith (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Rasmussen 6-1, 6-0. At number three singles, Inoue defeated Hilpert 6-0, 6-1 for the victory.
With the victory, Coe improved to 30-1 on the year. The Kohawks will host second-seeded Luther in the IIAC Championship match on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon at the Clark Racquet Center.
