SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College men's tennis team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday with a 5-3 win over Earlham in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Earlham took a 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at number two doubles, but Coe bounced back for wins at number one and three doubles to lead 2-1 into singles play. At number one doubles, senior Curtis Newman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) and sophomore Noah Sprinkel (Minneapolis, Minn./South) defeated Anton Bartashevich and Jack Ventura-Cruess 8-6. At number three doubles, senior Sean Stokstad (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein) and junior Michael Janssen (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) defeated Scott Lawrence and Andrey Gavrilov 9-8 (7-4).
Freshman Ryan Hickman (Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson) downed Lawrence 6-0, 6-2 at number six singles to put Coe up 3-1. Earlham earned wins at two and three singles to even the match 3-3. At the same time, Sprinkel defeated Bartashevich 6-2, 7-5 at number one, while Stokstad downed Gavrilov 7-6 (13-11), 6-1 at number five to lock up the victory.
The win advances the Kohawks to the NCAA Regional Championship match on Sunday. Coe will face host Washington University of St. Louis at Noon. The Bears are ranked 10th in the country. A link for live stats can be found on the front page of CoeAthletics.com.
