DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Kohawk women's basketball team fell just two points short from becoming the first six seed to ever win an Iowa Conference tournament game, dropping a 53-51 decision on the road to Loras.
Coe had several attempts in the final seconds to send the game into overtime, but none of the two shots in the last two seconds could find the bottom of the net before time expired, ending the Kohawks season.
The Kohawks jumped out to an early 20-9 lead after a basket from sophomore
Kayla Lincoln (Maynard, Iowa/West Central) with 10:47 to play in the first half, but a 19-7 Loras run to end the half gave the Duhawks a 28-27 lead at intermission.
A jumper by senior
Calie Sobaski (Iowa City, Iowa/City) put Coe back on top 29-28, starting a wild second half which saw neither team building more than a three point lead for the remainder of the game. With four minutes to go, sophomore
Sarah Anciaux (Iowa City, Iowa/City) connected on Coe's final field goal of the game, putting Coe in the lead 50-49. Loras regained the lead on the following possesion on a Lindsay Bava layup.
With 1:15 left, Anciaux connected on one of two free throws to tie the game at 51. Both teams missed on their next possesions before Loras' Mindy Meyer drove the lane for the go ahead layup with just :18 left. After a foul with five seconds to go,
Sarah Anciaux drove the lane but was unable to connect on two different attempts as time ran out.
Anciaux ended with a team-high 13 points and four assists, moving her up to fourth place in Coe's record books for career assists with 270. Sophomore
Devvin Rolston (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) finished with five assists, while Lincoln dished out four assists and three blocks. Sobaski ended her career with six points and six rebounds.
The Duhawk defense forced 15 turnovers on the night leading to ten points, while only committing eight turnovers of their own. Coe shot 46 percent from behind the arc but struggled at the free throw line, connecting on just 5-of-10 attempts.
The Kohawks close the season with a 14-12 overall record, while going 8-8 in the Iowa Conference.
