CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - We've hit the home stretch of the summer top 10 team events of the year. Coming in at number two on the list is the Men's Tennis teams 29-match winning streak en route to the IIAC title.
The Coe College men's tennis team had the best start to the season as any team in school history has ever had. The Kohawks won their first 29 matches of the year, as they went undefeated in the Iowa Conference before winning the Automatic Qualifier Tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament.
Coe's first big test was at 30th-ranked Kalamazoo on Feb. 16. The Kohawks improved to 5-0 with a 7-2 victory. Coe improved to 9-0 in the league opener, as they defeated Buena Vista 9-0 on Feb. 23. Exactly a month later, the Kohawks returned to league play with an 8-1 win over Central, improving to 19-0 on the year.
The 20th-straight win came in convincing fashion against league rival Luther. The Kohawks downed the Norse 8-1 on April 6. Coe picked up its fourth and fifth league wins on April 12, as it defeated Loras 9-0 and Dubuque 8-1, improving to 23-0 on the year. The 25th-straight win came April 21, as Coe rolled Simpson 9-0.
An 8-1 win over Wartburg on April 24 gave the Kohawks the undefeated Iowa Conference season, as they improved to 27-0 on the year. April 26 brought the most challenging weekend of the year for the Kohawks. Coe traveled to Wheaton for the opening match, where they downed the Thunder 8-1. A 6-3 victory over Elmhurst the next day gave Coe the 29th-straight win to start the year. 28th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater ended the streak the following day with a 7-2 victory over the Kohawks.
A pair of 6-0 wins over Wartburg and Luther in the IIAC NCAA AQ Tournament sent the Kohawks back to the NCAA Tournament. Following a first round bye, Coe defeated Earlham 5-3 before dropping a 5-1 match to 10th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
