STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team won two more matches on Saturday, as they improved to 4-0 on the year with two more shutouts against Buena Vista and Northwestern (Iowa).
The Kohawks opened the day with a 9-0 win over Buena Vista. It was the second Iowa Conference shutout of the season for Coe. At number one doubles, junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and freshman Kaitlin Fosler (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) defeated Haley Henrichs and Kassidy Ipsen 8-6. Fosler was also a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Emmerly Mai at number six singles.
At number two doubles, sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Elizabeth Heffernan and Tasha Nelson 8-1. At number three singles, Birky downed Ipsen 6-1, 6-0.
Coe's final doubles win came at number three, as senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) defeated Samantha Kavan and Mai 8-0. Hoffmann also picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tarynne Kinghorn at number four singles, while Watson earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Kavan at number five singles.
The Kohawks also earned singles wins at number one and two. At number one, senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) downed Henrichs 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) beat Heffernan 6-4, 6-2 at number two.
In Coe's second win of the day, the Kohawks once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. At number one, Lucero and Ferree defeated Frankie Eszes and Alex Brower 8-2. Ferree also picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Valerie Robinson at number two singles.
At number two doubles, Birky and Lasecki downed Jami Koens and Robinson 8-2. Birky also was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Koens at number three singles. Coe's final doubles win came at number three, as Sebastian and Hoffmann defeated Hannah Stork and Amanda Bueltel 8-0. Sebastian also earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Eszes at number one singles, while Hoffmann defeated Stork 6-1, 6-0 at number four singles.
Coe's final two singles wins came from Watson at number five and freshman Virginia Meurer (Dubuque, Iowa/Senior) at number six. Watson was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Bueltel, while Meurer downed McKayla Johnson 6-1, 6-1.
The Kohawks (4-0) return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Mount Vernon to face Cornell. The match will be the second Bremner Cup Series event of the year between the two schools in the all-sports competition. Cornell currently holds a 1-0 lead. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
