SAINT PETER, Minn. - The third-ranked Denison women's tennis team defeated the 19th-ranked Kohawks Friday in the first round of the ITA Indoor National Championships. It was just the second loss of the year for the Kohawks, as they previously fell to 16th-ranked Washington Univ.
The Big Red opened play with a three wins in doubles play. Senior
Molly Fiala (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and junior
Andrea Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus), the fourth-ranked pair in the central region, fell 8-3 to Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane, the top-ranked doubles team in the region.
In singles play, 19th-ranked Fiala fell to 10th-ranked Cobb 6-3, 6-2. Schupbach then dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 decision to 14th-ranked Erin Chadwell. 21st-ranked sophomore
Hannah Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa/West) fell to fifth-ranked Drane 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 to conclude the match.
The Big Red improved to 2-1 on the year, while the Kohawks fell to 13-2. The Kohawks were ranked sixth as a team in the Central Region, while Denison was first. Coe will return to action twice on Saturday, playing seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer at 8:30 a.m. They will also play their final matches of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
