MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team cruised to their fifth-straight win to start the year Tuesday as they beat rival Cornell 9-0. It was the fifth shutout of the year for the Kohawks.
The Kohawks opened with three doubles wins. At number one doubles, senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) beat Ariana Hudson and Shashanna Moll 8-1. Ferree also earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Moll at number two singles.
At number two doubles, sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Anne Seng and Heather Schrauth 8-1. Birky also picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Seng at number three singles, while Lasecki was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Veronika Reidel at number six singles.
Coe's final doubles victory came at number three, as sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) and senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) downed Dana Dowell and Reidel 8-2. Watson also picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Schrauth at number five singles, while Hoffmann beat Dowell 6-0, 6-0 at number four. The final victory for the Kohawks came at number one singles, as sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) downed Hudson 7-5, 6-4.
The victory evened the 2013-14 Bremner Cup Series at one win apiece in the all-sports standings between the two schools. Coe will return to Iowa Conference play on Saturday, as they host Central at 10:30 a.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
