CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team won its sixth-straight match to start the year Saturday, as they beat Central 8-1. Coe improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Iowa Conference.
The Kohawks took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. At number one doubles, senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and sophomore Tamara Washington (Corona, Calif./Norco) downed Angie Allgood and Megan Davis 8-5. Lucero was also a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number one singles over Allgood.
At number two doubles, sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Ashlyn Huegel and Anna Bowser 8-5. Birky was also a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Huegel at number four singles.
Coe's third doubles win came at number three, as senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) defeated Katie Todd and Sarah Montgomery 8-0. Ferree also earned a 7-5, 7-6 win over Bowser at number three singles, while Hoffmann downed Montgomery 6-0, 2-6, 10-6 at number five singles. The final win for the Kohawks came at number two singles, as sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) downed Davis 6-4, 6-3.
The Kohawks return to action on Sunday, as they travel to Luther for a 2 p.m. match in Decorah. Coe and Luther have combined to win the last 11 Iowa Conference Championships.
