DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team won its 20th-straight regular season match against an Iowa Conference opponent on Sunday, as they downed league rival Luther 5-4.
For the first time all season, the Kohawks trailed after doubles play. Luther held a 2-1 advantage, gaining wins at one and three. Coe's lone victory came at number two, as sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) downed Hailey Johnson and Lola White-Baer 8-6. Birky also picked up a 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 win at number four singles over Caroline Treis.
At number one singles, senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) defeated White-Baer 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Maggie Helms at number two singles. Coe's final singles victory came at number six, as sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) downed Olivia Heitz 7-6 (5-0), 6-4.
The Kohawks return to action on Wednesday, as they host Wartburg. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. at the Clark Racquet Center.
