WAVERLY, Iowa - Sophomore
Ashley Schnell (Lincoln, Neb./North Star) was named the Iowa Conference Female Track and Field MVP Saturday, following her impressive performance at the conference championships.
Schnell took first place honors in the 800-meter run for the second-straight year. She just missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in a time of 2:16.69. Schnell also took first place honors in the mile run, finishing in 5:11.10.
Schnell then anchored the 4x800 meter relay team to a first place finish in 9:28.46. The time broke the Iowa Conference record, as well as the Hoover Fieldhouse record. Their time was :08 faster than the time set last year by Simpson. Junior Jessie Robison (Iowa City, Iowa/City), senior Katie Flores (Erie, Colo./Erie) and senior Naomi Hillsman (Iowa City, Iowa/West) were also on the conference champion 4x800 team.
Sophomore Lane Moser (Wapello, Iowa/Wapello) finished third in the 5,000-meter run in time of 15:17.74. Senior Kyle Brockmeyer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) placed third in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.85. The men's distance medley team of freshman Andrew Dewar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), sophomore Justin Janss, freshman Kory Heineman (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) and sophomore Ryan Schroeder (Byron, Ill./Byron) also placed third in 10:28.38.
As a team, the Kohawk women placed sixth with 41 points, while the men finished tied for eighth with 33 points.
