CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team locked up a berth in the Iowa Conference Tournament Wednesday with an 8-1 win over Wartburg, as they improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the IIAC.
The Kohawks took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. At number one doubles, senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian) and junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) downed Melissa Davis and Liz Rucker 8-1. Lucero was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Katherine Ross at number one singles, while Ferree picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emily Rasmussen at number three singles.
Coe went up 2-0 in singles play with a 9-8 win at number two from sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy), as they beat Rasmussen and Ross.
The final doubles win came at number three, as sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) and senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) downed Jessica Behrer and Marissa Buresh 8-4. Hoffmann also was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Rucker at number five singles, while Watson picked up a 6-7, 6-1, 10-5 win over Buresh at number six singles. Coe's final singles win came at number two, as sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills downed Davis 6-2, 6-1.
Coe will return to action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as they travel to St. Peter, Minn. for the ITA Midwest Regional.
