SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Coe women's tennis team placed eighth late Saturday night at the ITA National Indoor Championships. All eight teams in the field were ranked in the top 19 in the country.
After falling to third-ranked Denison in the opening round, the Kohawks were faced with seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer from California. The Sagehens improved to 3-1 on the season with an 8-1 victory over the Kohawks. The doubles pair of senior
Molly Fiala (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) and junior
Andrea Schupbach (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) were the only victors for Coe, as they earned a 9-8 (7-3) decision at number one doubles.
The Kohawks earned their most victories in the tournament in the seventh-place match against host Gustavus, but weren't able to come out on top, as they fell 6-3 to the 18th-ranked Golden Gusties. Fiala and Schupbach picked up an 8-2 decision at number one doubles. Fiala then followed that with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sierra Krebsbach at number one singles, while sophomore
Hannah Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa/West) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at number two singles.
Coe will return to action March 9 as they face St. Scholastica at 9 a.m. central time in Florida.
