SAINT PETER, Minn. - A singles player and a doubles team are still alive after the first day of the ITA Midwest Regional Tennis Championships for the Kohawks, hosted by Gustavus.

Senior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian), the top-seed in the singles bracket, won her opening round match 6-3, 6-3 over Carleton's Claire Spencer. In the second round, Lucero defeated Luther's Caroline Tries 6-1, 7-5. In the third round on Saturday, Lucero will face Shelby Henderson of St. Thomas.

Sophomore Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) defeated Virginia Purcell of Grinnell 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round. In the second round, Birky fell 6-0, 6-0 to third-seeded Alex Bayliss of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Sophomore Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) scored a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Bari Reynolds of Carthage in the first round. In the second round, Wisconsin-Whitewater's Erika Williams downed Sebastian 7-6 (4), 6-2. Ninth-seeded Michaela Schulz of Gustavus downed junior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round.

In doubles play, Lucero and Ferree received a bye before defeating Grinnell's Purcell and Hanna Feldman 8-3. In their opening match on Saturday, Lucero and Ferree, seeded fifth, will face 10th-seeded Henderson and Lauren Keller of St. Thomas.

After a first round bye, senior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and sophomore Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) were downed 8-1 by Bayliss and Jackie Vitale of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Birky and freshman Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) earned an 8-0 win over Sam Hoyord and Sarah Wick of Carroll in the opening round before dropping an 8-6 decision to Abby Day and Hillary Franzen of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Play will resume again Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
